Round Rock is a Texas town known for its excellent quality of living, fun attractions, and affordable housing options, making it perfect for people of all lifestyles. The city began as a small settlement in the 1850s, which adopted its official name from the prominent round rock that still sits in the middle of Brushy Creek. This creek sat along the famed Chisholm Trail used by cowboys to drive cattle from South Texas to the Kansas railyards. Like much of the untamed West at that time, Round Rock became an agricultural center, primarily producing cotton and cattle. Today, most of the area’s ranch and farmland has been razed in favor of new subdivisions and strip centers with big box stores as neighboring Austin spills over its borders. Located less than 20 miles from the capital city, Round Rock now has an estimated population of just over 120,000 residents. Despite rapid population growth in recent years, Round Rock still manages to maintain its small-town charm.
One of the greatest advantages to living in Round Rock is the city’s proximity to notable places of interest.
Old Settlers Association and RV Park
The Old Settlers Association hosts a collection of relics from Texas’ pioneer days, including three historic log cabins, an old general store, and retired fire engines housed in the property’s Firehouse Museum. Visitors may also stop to admire Palm Mansion, a beautiful home built by Swedish settlers, or attend the fun-filled Pioneer Days, a festival geared towards families with children.
Round Rock Express
The Round Rock Express, a AAA affiliate of the MLB Texas Rangers, plays at the Dell Diamond. Round Rock Express games are well-attended, with an average of over 600,000 visitors a year. The program has produced notable alumni including Roy Oswalt, Taylor Teagarden, and Roger Clemens, all of whom went on to play for one or both of Texas’ major league teams (the Astros and the Texas Rangers).
Downtown Round Rock
Downtown Round Rock features shops and restaurants and hosts outdoor music shows, art festivals and seasonal markets throughout much of the year. Annual events include the Model Train Show, the Chalk Walk Festival, and the Round Rock Market Days, among others.
Round Rock Public Parks
You can also explore the local parks while getting to know the area. Chisholm Trail Crossing Park takes you back in time to the earliest days of the Chisholm cattle drive. Memorial Park is situated along the banks of Brushy Creek and includes a playground, picnic tables and outdoor grills. You can also head to Greenlawn Park and take a walk along the paved path or spend an afternoon soaking up the sun.
Round Rock is largely made up of suburban neighborhoods that offer residents peaceful living away from the rapid pace of Austin. One of the most popular subdivisions is Teravista, located just east of I-35 behind the Round Rock Premium Outlets. Homes in this golf course community are priced from the mid-$300,000s, and the neighborhood features custom homes from 9 different Central Texas homebuilders. Residents have access to several on-site amenities including an 18-hole championship golf course, three pools, 24-hour fitness centers, and over 10 miles of trails. West of I-35, the North Brushy Creek neighborhood features older homes priced in the $300,000s and $400,000s, offering new residents the opportunity to make their own updates. This established neighborhood features large treed lots and is located close to the all the action. While these communities are two of the gems, Round Rock has dozens of other affordable neighborhoods from which to choose.
