History

The zoo was established way back in 1914. The first zoo in San Antonio featured a collection of animals in San Pedro Park in the 1800s. Colonel George W. Brackenridge, the founder of San Antonio Express-News, placed monkeys, deer, elk, buffalo, four bears, and a pair of lions in the city, known as Brackenridge Park.

The collection became the San Antonio Zoo. The volunteer leaders of the zoo have not just given generous financial assistance, but they have also encouraged innovation. Two of America’s first cageless exhibits – the Barless Bear Terraces and Primate Paradise opened in November 1929. It offered visitors unprecedented animal views. The San Antonio Zoo celebrated its 100 Years in 2014.
